The story begins with the churning of the ocean, as told in the tale of Samudra Manthan. It is said that when the gods and demons churned the ocean together, the pot of amrit emerged. In order to attain that nectar, a demon named Rahu deceitfully infiltrated among the gods and took a sip of the nectar. Lord Vishnu, realising this deception, promptly severed Rahu's head with his Sudarshan Chakra. However, since Rahu had consumed the nectar, he became immortal. While his body merged into the ocean, his head fell on Earth. It is believed that his head fell in the village of Paithani in the Pauri Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Today, the Rahu Temple stands at that very spot. This unique temple worships Rahu not as a deity, but along with Lord Shiva. In astrology, Rahu and Ketu are considered shadow planets, and their influence can be either positive or negative. This temple is particularly famous for the Rahu-Ketu Shanti Puja.
